For this unit, Mediating Fashion, the brief given to us asks
Who is my ideal spectator?
Where will I situate my practice?
What am I aiming to achieve?
Is there a specific point I would like to mediate?
The reasoning behind my response.
With the current age of fashion moving more towards films, the films that have been around are also evolving in the way it is put together, the style of it. Films are getting experimental and where being alive in this time of age where most types of films have been tried, being experimental is encouraged.
This term has allowed me to have current fashion film makers like Amy Gwatkin, Kathryn Ferguson, and Marie Schuller, to name a few, gracing the classes with their presence, and sharing valuable knowledge of their practice.
Before we dove into the research, the tutors put up slides explaining what a fashion film in this age might be. Here are a few varying quotes to get me started.
"Fashion makes a great fashion film. The narrative is already in the piece of clothing."
-Nick Knight
"You have to cast a vibe and tell a story, if you don't then it's just garments."
-JW Anderson
"A fashion film, well you can't really put in a box what exactly is a fashion film. Originally thought of as a moving lookbook, it has now evolved into so much more. The way it is constructed, with the effects or even the story can be anything. Fashion film rather is more of a term for where it comes from, it could be anything but say if it's directed by e.g. Tom Ford, it will be classified as a fashion film even if it isn't about marketing his collection."
-Stephen Whelan
